The Batman star was originally set to appear in Greta Gerwig's blockbuster hit but had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts. Michael Cera stepped in to fill the void, revealing the behind-the-scenes story at a recent cast event.

Ben Affleck's filmography includes some major box office hits, though not all have been critically acclaimed. His biggest earners come from the DC Extended Universe, along with several Michael Bay productions, romantic comedies, and superhero flicks like Daredevil that didn't quite hit the mark.

However, Affleck came close to being part of what could have been his highest-grossing film ever. The actor was originally slated to make a cameo appearance in Greta Gerwig's record-breaking Barbie movie. He would have appeared in the "Beach Fight" sequence, likely portraying another version of Ken. Unfortunately, his commitment to directing Air forced him to pass on the opportunity.

Michael Cera Spills the Details

This insider information comes straight from Michael Cera, who played Allan in Barbieland. During a cast and crew Q&A session, Cera shared the story before momentarily worrying about revealing too much. "Am I allowed to say that?" he asked, getting approval to continue. "I think Ben wanted to do it, but he was directing his movie."

Cera found himself stepping into the breach when Affleck couldn't participate. "They're like, 'Okay, Ben's out, something has to happen here. So you're gonna fight them,'" Cera explained. "So I had to jump in with the stunt team. I had just gotten over Covid, and they had me training, and I almost died."

Star-Studded Cameo Collection

If Affleck had joined the cast, he would have been among impressive company. John Cena made a brief appearance as the aquatic "Kenmaid," reportedly choosing to participate despite being advised against it. Rhea Perlman surprised audiences as Ruth Handler, the inventor of the Barbie doll in 1959.

The most touching cameo belongs to Ann Roth, the elderly woman who shares a meaningful moment with Margot Robbie's character at a bus stop. Roth, a legendary costume designer and two-time Oscar winner, is 94 years old and a close friend of director Gerwig.

Awards Season Showdown

Despite focusing on sneakers, Air became one of 2023's most well-received films critically. This put it in direct competition with Barbie during awards season. Both movies received nominations for Best Original Screenplay from the Writers Guild of America, though The Holdovers ultimately took home the prize.

At the Critics' Choice Awards, the films competed in multiple categories, with Barbie beating Air for Best Original Screenplay. While Barbie earned eight Oscar nominations, Air's Academy Awards performance was less impressive.

Affleck's absence didn't hurt Barbie's massive success, though he likely regrets missing his chance at a billion-dollar hit. Still, his decision to prioritize directing Air was understandable given the circumstances.
