Acclaimed British actress Geraldine James opens up about competing against Meryl Streep for major roles and her complicated feelings about the Hollywood legend's success.

Acting is cutthroat by nature. Only one person gets the part, no matter how many talented performers audition. The bigger the production, the more likely established stars will snag the role over newcomers.

That's just how Hollywood works. Always has been.

Unknown actors occasionally break through in major films when producers take calculated risks. But when it comes down to casting a newcomer versus Meryl Streep? The 21-time Oscar nominee usually wins.

The Frustration of Competing Against a Legend

Imagine knowing you're racing against Usain Bolt. Why even bother lacing up your sneakers?

British actress Geraldine James understands this feeling all too well. She's competed against Streep for the same roles multiple times throughout her career. The frustration hits especially hard when parts call for English accents - supposedly James's home advantage.

"I was terrified to play that iconic Canadian character, Marilla Cuthbert. To be British and portraying her in Canada, I could feel daggers coming through the air at me from every Canadian actress of a certain age," James told the Telegraph. "And I don't blame them. I would have been the same."

"Sit Down, Meryl!"

James didn't hold back about her complicated relationship with Streep's success. "I certainly was when Meryl Streep used to get all the parts that I was up for - The French Lieutenant's Woman, Out of Africa."

"I used to think, 'Sit down, Meryl, and let someone else have a go!' Although I'd cast Meryl Streep over me any day. I mean, she's phenomenal."

It's hard to argue with Streep's Hollywood reign. Her career launched with 1977's Julia after years of stage work. Since then, she's tackled everything from Kramer vs Kramer to Mamma Mia! with remarkable versatility.

Different Paths to Success

The 1980s belonged to Streep. She dominated with lead roles in acclaimed films like Sophie's Choice and Silkwood. Her consistency and brilliance during that decade remain unmatched.

James took a different route. Television became her stronger medium, though she appeared in notable films including Oscar-nominated The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and 45 Years.

Maybe someday they'll share the screen. For now, James continues building her own impressive career while acknowledging the mountain that is Meryl Streep's talent.
