A haunting new comic series explores the twisted backstory of Lady Mary Van Tassel and her deadly pact with the Headless Horseman, diving deeper into the supernatural world that captivated audiences decades ago.

Nearly three decades after audiences first witnessed the terror of Westchester County, the gothic world that made Johnny Depp's Ichabod Crane a household name is expanding in an unexpected direction. The 1999 supernatural thriller that became a defining moment in cinema history will spawn a five-part comic series exploring the darkest corners of its mythology.

IDW Publishing announced their IDW Dark imprint will launch "Sleepy Hollow: The Witches of the Western Wood" this May 6. The series promises to uncover the sinister origins of Lady Mary Van Tassel, the vengeful witch who orchestrated the Headless Horseman's reign of terror before meeting her own hellish fate.

From Sarah Archer to Lady Van Tassel

Miranda Richardson's memorable villain gets a complete backstory treatment in this prequel. The comic will trace her transformation from an abused girl named Sarah Archer into the powerful sorceress who commanded the undead Hessian soldier. Writer Delilah S. Dawson and artist Jose Jaro are crafting a tale that predates the movie's events entirely.

"I've been a fan of Sleepy Hollow since I saw it in the theater in 1999 and a fan of Tim Burton since Pee Wee's Big Adventure, so getting to play in a world as dark and whimsical as I am has been an absolute treat," Dawson explained. "I once had a lucid dream in the witch cave while falling asleep to the movie, which now almost feels like a portent of what was to come; this world lives in my bones. Prepare yourself to learn the secret history of Lady Van Tassel and her relationship with the Horseman — if you dare."

Darker Than Ever Before

This isn't IDW's first venture into Burton's supernatural universe. Last year saw the release of "Return to Sleepy Hollow," a five-issue sequel set fifteen years after Crane's investigation concluded. But this new prequel takes a different approach entirely.

The official synopsis reveals Sarah Archer's tragic beginnings alongside her twin sister, enduring abuse while learning witchcraft. Her fateful encounter with the Hessian soldier at his moment of death becomes the catalyst for her transformation into a formidable supernatural force.

Editor Riley Farmer confirmed Paramount Pictures granted unusual creative freedom for this project. "We wanted to understand this fearsome witch and the Horseman a bit better, and Paramount has been a wonderful partner in doing so — allowing us to push the story to be darker and more horrific than anything Sleepy Hollow has seen before," she stated. "And the way that Jose Jaro is bringing that horror to life is captivating (and sometimes gruesome!). I can't wait for readers to see the Horseman's first ride — heads will roll!"

Pre-Orders and Release Details

Comic shops are accepting pre-orders through March 30, with the debut issue hitting shelves May 6. The series will run for five issues total, each promising to peel back layers of the supernatural conspiracy that terrorized the Hudson Valley.

For fans who've waited decades to return to Burton's atmospheric interpretation of Washington Irving's classic tale, this comic series offers something the original film never could: a deep dive into the villain's psyche and the supernatural forces that shaped one of horror cinema's most memorable antagonists.
