The legendary director has a backup plan to reveal his vision for the franchise's future if the remaining films don't get made, while also considering alternative storytelling formats.

The director behind one of cinema's most ambitious franchises has made an unusual promise to fans. With Avatar: Fire and Ash currently pulling in more than half a billion dollars at box offices worldwide, James Cameron is still playing it safe when it comes to the saga's long-term future.

Contingency Plans for Unfinished Stories

Cameron has been mapping out at least five installments for years, with speculation that the final chapter could bring the blue-skinned Na'vi to our planet. But the filmmaker isn't taking anything for granted. Should the third movie fall short of expectations set by earlier entries, he's got a fallback strategy ready.

"If we don't get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I'll hold a press conference, and I'll tell you what we were gonna do," Cameron shared with Entertainment Weekly. The director acknowledged his own doubts about whether the series will reach its planned conclusion, though he's clearly hoping it will.

Alternative Storytelling Formats

Beyond public revelations, Cameron has considered transforming his vision into written form if the movies never materialize. He pointed to the extensive world-building and character development that could translate well to literature, given the deep cultural foundations he's created for this universe.

However, the director recognizes a significant obstacle in today's market. He noted that a solid business model for such publications no longer exists, explaining that "people aren't reading." Despite this challenge, any literary work from Cameron would likely attract considerable interest from devoted followers of the franchise.
