The former Captain America star opens up about his post-superhero film choices, revealing which project he wishes he could take back and how he's changing his approach to selecting roles.

After hanging up the shield as Captain America, Chris Evans found himself in an enviable position - financially secure and free to choose any project he wanted. However, the actor's decisions following his Marvel exit have left many scratching their heads, including Evans himself.

From Superhero to Questionable Choices

Throughout his time as Steve Rogers, Evans demonstrated remarkable range by taking on challenging roles between Marvel films. He worked with acclaimed directors like Danny Boyle in Sunshine, Edgar Wright in Scott Pilgrim vs the World, and Bong Joon-ho in Snowpiercer. These projects showcased his ability to avoid being pigeonholed as just another action star.

But when Avengers: Endgame concluded his superhero journey, Evans seemed to abandon this smart strategy. Instead of continuing with prestige projects, he gravitated toward forgettable blockbusters like The Gray Man and the widely panned holiday flick Red One alongside Dwayne Johnson.

The Film He Wishes He Could Forget

Among all his post-Marvel ventures, none stung quite like Ghosted, a romantic comedy co-starring Ana de Armas. The film not only miscast Evans as an awkward guy who couldn't land a date, but it also embraced every tired rom-com trope imaginable.

Evans didn't shy away from taking responsibility for the project's failure. Speaking candidly, he acknowledged the film's shortcomings weren't due to audience preferences but rather poor execution. "I didn't think audiences had outgrown it prior, and I still don't think they have, despite the fact, I mean, technically I think we did OK on, in terms of viewership," Evans explained. "Critics didn't like it, but that's more the fault of the movie as opposed to the appetite of the audience. I think the appetite's there, if it's done properly. We could have been better."

A Return to Form

Fortunately, Evans appears to have learned from his missteps. His 2025 projects - Ethan Coen's Honey, Don't! and Celine Song's Materialists - represent a return to the thoughtful role selection that marked his pre-Marvel peak. While neither film received universal acclaim, critics consistently praised Evans' performances, noting his willingness to take on character-driven parts that didn't rely solely on his natural charm.

Whether Evans will return to the Marvel universe in upcoming Avengers films remains uncertain, but his recent choices suggest he's committed to rebuilding his reputation as a serious actor willing to take creative risks.
