The 28 Days Later veteran can't stop praising his co-star's captivating portrayal of Jimmy Crystal in the upcoming zombie sequel, describing the performance as utterly mesmerizing.

Cillian Murphy can't contain his excitement about Jack O'Connell's turn as cult leader Jimmy Crystal in the upcoming 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The original franchise star gushed about his co-star's work in a recent video from the film's official social media account.

"The performances are mind-blowingly good. All of them," Murphy declared. When producer Danny Boyle highlighted O'Connell specifically, Murphy doubled down on his praise. "He's just magnetic. Absolutely magnetic. One of those classic characters that you love to hate, but can't actually hate, you know? Even though you should on all levels."

New Direction, Familiar Faces

O'Connell brings Jimmy Crystal to life sporting a blond wig and velour tracksuit. The character leads a cult in this latest chapter of the zombie apocalypse saga. Nia DaCosta, known for directing Candyman and The Marvels, steps behind the camera for The Bone Temple, taking over from Danny Boyle. Alex Garland returns to pen the screenplay, maintaining continuity with the franchise's established voice.

Ralph Fiennes reprises his role as Dr. Ian Kelson from 28 Years Later. Alfie Williams joins the cast as Spike, a fresh recruit to Jimmy's cult organization. Murphy himself makes a brief return as Jim, the bike courier who survived the original Rage Virus outbreak in 2002's 28 Days Later.

Franchise Expansion Plans

The Bone Temple won't mark the end of this zombie universe. A third 28 Years Later film is already in development, with Garland attached to write the script. The project lacks a confirmed title or director, though Boyle has expressed interest in returning for the trilogy's conclusion.

Murphy remains in discussions to reprise his Jim character for the third installment. The franchise continues to build on its foundation while introducing new characters and storylines.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple hits theaters January 16. The film promises to expand the universe that began over two decades ago with the original 28 Days Later.
