The legendary director once revealed his surprising choice for a dream collaboration, despite both figures having faced significant controversies throughout their careers.

Francis Ford Coppola stands among cinema's greatest directors. His masterpieces like the first two Godfather films, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, and Bram Stoker's Dracula cement his legendary status. Yet this Oscar-winning filmmaker presents a puzzling contradiction - the same visionary who guided Marlon Brando's iconic performance also directed Robin Williams in the widely panned Jack.

Recent years have brought additional challenges to Coppola's reputation. His latest project, Megalopolis, faced criticism both for its quality and reports of inappropriate behavior toward female extras during production. His comments about Hollywood being "too woke" have further complicated his public image.

An Unexpected Choice

Back in 1996, during an interview with Deseret News, Coppola made a surprising revelation about his dream collaborator. When asked about actors he'd like to work with, he named Mel Gibson without hesitation. "I would love to do a film with him. But it's just a matter of finding the right project," the director stated.

At the time, Gibson had already shown some troubling behavior, including controversial remarks about the LGBTQ+ community to a Spanish publication in 1991. However, his most damaging controversies - the incidents that would lead to his Hollywood blacklisting - were still years away.

Parallel Careers

Despite their controversial reputations, both filmmakers share remarkable similarities. Each has won the Academy Award for Best Director, both have self-financed projects when studios wouldn't back them, and unfortunately, both have released critically panned films in recent years. Megalopolis and Flight Risk represent low points that make future projects uncertain for either director.

Gibson managed a significant comeback with 2016's Hacksaw Ridge, earning critical acclaim and another Best Director nomination. The rehabilitation seemed complete until his recent appointment as Donald Trump's "Special Ambassador to Hollywood" reminded audiences why many had distanced themselves from him initially.

With Coppola approaching 87 in 2026, time is running short for this potential collaboration. Whether such a partnership would benefit cinema remains highly questionable, given both men's recent track records and ongoing controversies.
