Daniel Kaluuya's Spider-Punk Movie Is Officially Taking Shape
After stealing the show in *Across the Spider-Verse*, Hobie Brown is getting his own spotlight. Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya shares a major update on the standalone Spider-Punk project he's co-writing, revealing key details about its development and the creative forces helping bring it to life.
Audiences left theaters after Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse with two things on their mind: the cliffhanger ending and a desperate need for more Hobie Brown. Daniel Kaluuya’s portrayal of the anarchic, establishment-hating Spider-Punk was an instant fan favorite. The Londoner’s laid-back charisma and torn-up costume made him a scene-stealer, so it’s no surprise the Academy Award-winning actor wanted to dig deeper into the character with a dedicated story.
From Screen to Script
The project, first announced back in August, sees Kaluuya teaming up with co-writer Ajon Singh to pen a solo adventure for the web-slinging punk rocker. Now, Kaluuya has confirmed that the duo is in the “finishing stages” of their initial script draft. The creative process has been a collaborative one, drawing support from some of the key architects behind the animated universe.
Kaluuya expressed his deep admiration for the franchise and its creators. “Those Spider-Verse films, they speak to me,” he told Deadline. “I was so inspired by them. I think the filmmakers and the animators are some of the best storytellers in the game. So, I want to put myself in environments where I can grow and learn what they know.”
Guidance from the Masters
Fortunately, Kaluuya isn't going it alone. He revealed that he has the full blessing of franchise producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, who have been instrumental in providing pointers on character development. Kaluuya shared a key piece of advice from Lord, who explained that “films aren’t about people, they’re about relationships.” This insight offers a glimpse into the storytelling philosophy that has made the series so successful.
Praising the producers' powerful creative partnership, the Get Out star highlighted their infectious enthusiasm. “They also tap into a joy of cinema and storytelling and animation, and I think joy is so hard to do, and that’s something I’m aspiring for,” Kaluuya added. “They love what they do, and that’s what the audience is really feeling.”
It remains to be seen how much of the Spider-Verse's signature vibrant style will translate into Kaluuya's story, which is still in its early phases of development. In the meantime, fans will have to wait a bit longer for the next chapter in Miles Morales's journey; Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently slated to hit theaters on June 18, 2027.
