The filmmaker sets the record straight about a widely circulated claim involving Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn's performances in the original Marvel blockbuster.

A popular internet theory about an unscripted moment in the original Guardians of the Galaxy has been officially debunked by the film's director. The rumor centered around a scene where Yondu and Kraglin visit the Broker to learn about the mysterious Orb housing the Power Stone.

Social media clips suggested that Michael Rooker improvised his character's mocking gibberish directed at the Broker when the alien couldn't provide answers. The viral posts claimed Sean Gunn genuinely struggled not to laugh, supposedly "breaking character" as Kraglin.

The Real Story Behind the Scene

The director quickly corrected the record on social media. "Nope. Both Yondu's mocking and Kraglin suppressing a smile were scripted," he wrote in response to the circulating video.

The filmmaker revealed additional production details that explain the confusion. "What is true is I shot the closeup of Sean in pickups because I didn't grab one on the day and I needed a cutaway," he explained.

Technical Details Revealed

The close-up shot of Sean Gunn was actually filmed against a blue screen during additional photography. The background was later composited using an empty plate from the original shooting day. This technical approach created the final version audiences see in theaters.

"So, yeah, hardly 'breaking character.' When you hear about 'reshoots' these are usually the types of things my team is doing," the director clarified, explaining how pickup shots work in major productions.

From Marvel to DC

After completing the Guardians trilogy between 2014 and 2023, the filmmaker transitioned to running DC Studios. He directed last year's Superman film and will return for Man of Tomorrow, featuring the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor in 2027.

The next DC project under his leadership is Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock from House of the Dragon as Kara Zor-El. The film hits theaters June 26.
