The filmmaker behind Stranger Things season 5's behind-the-scenes documentary pushes back against fan theories that the show's creators relied on artificial intelligence to craft their final season script.

Fans dissecting Netflix's behind-the-scenes documentary spotted something troubling in the background of the Duffer brothers' workspace. A screenshot from "One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5" shows Matt and Ross Duffer crafting their final season script on Google Docs. Among their browser tabs, viewers claim they spotted ChatGPT running alongside Reddit.

Social media erupted with accusations. "Duffer Brothers really used ChatGPT for this script?" one Twitter user posted, sharing the damning screenshot. The series creators haven't responded to the growing controversy.

Director Pushes Back on AI Allegations

Documentary filmmaker Martina Radwan stepped forward to address the speculation in a recent Hollywood Reporter interview. She questioned whether fans could even prove ChatGPT was actually open on the brothers' computers.

"Nobody has actually proved that it was open," Radwan said. "But to me it's like, doesn't everybody have it open, to just do quick research? That's like having your iPhone next to your computer while you're writing a story."

Her point carries weight. OpenAI data shows ChatGPT reached over 800 mn weekly active users by late 2025. The tool has become commonplace for everyday tasks.

Creative Process Under Scrutiny

Radwan dismissed the idea that AI could handle Stranger Things' complex storytelling demands. "How can you possibly write a storyline with 19 characters and use ChatGPT? I don't even understand," she argued.

When pressed directly about witnessing unethical AI use in the writers' room, Radwan was definitive. "No, of course not. I witnessed creative exchanges. I witnessed conversation."

The controversy highlights growing tensions around AI in Hollywood. Writers and creators face increasing scrutiny over potential artificial intelligence assistance. Yet no concrete evidence exists that the Duffers actually used ChatGPT for scriptwriting purposes.

"One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5" remains available on Netflix, browser tabs and all.
