The Hobbit star hints at his involvement in Andy Serkis's directorial debut while praising the reunion of original Lord of the Rings creative team for the 2027 release.

Elijah Wood won't officially confirm his return as Frodo Baggins, but his enthusiasm for The Hunt for Gollum speaks volumes. The actor addressed Ian McKellen's summer revelation about the casting during a recent Fan Expo appearance in New Orleans.

"I can neither confirm nor deny. Listen, a wizard is to be trusted," Wood said when asked about McKellen's comments. The veteran actor had previously spilled details at a fan event, revealing that both Frodo and Gandalf would appear in the upcoming film.

Creative Team Reunion Excites Wood

Wood expressed genuine excitement about the project's creative direction. "I'm really excited about the film. I think it really is a creative 'getting the band back together.' A lot of the creative heads of department are back and in that space again."

The actor confirmed that Phillipa Boyens, who penned the original trilogy's screenplay, "is co-writing it and producing it." This reunion of key personnel has Wood particularly thrilled about the project's potential.

Serkis Takes Director's Chair

Andy Serkis will direct the film, a choice that Wood wholeheartedly supports. "It feels so unbelievably appropriate that he directs a film about his character that he has really made his own. I'm thrilled. It'll be great."

The decision puts Serkis in dual roles as both the titular character and the film's creative leader. Wood believes this arrangement will bring authentic insight to Gollum's story.

Future Films in Development

Warner Bros announced plans for additional Middle-earth movies beyond The Hunt for Gollum. Wood acknowledged these ambitious plans with cautious optimism.

"I know their intention is to make other films in this universe. And that's exciting, interesting to see where that goes, but very exciting," he said. The Hunt for Gollum will hit theaters December 17, 2027, potentially launching a new chapter in the beloved franchise.
