Flash Writer Christina Hodson Tackles New DCU Batman Script
Christina Hodson, who penned The Flash and Birds of Prey, has been tapped to write the script for The Brave and the Bold, the upcoming DCU Batman film directed by Andy Muschietti. The project won't hit theaters until 2028 at the earliest.
Warner Bros. has quietly secured a screenwriter for its next Batman venture. Christina Hodson, the scribe behind The Flash and Birds of Prey, is now crafting the screenplay for The Brave and the Bold, the DCU's upcoming Dark Knight film.
The project was first unveiled in January 2023 as part of James Gunn's "Gods and Monsters" slate. While Superman and Creature Commandos have already launched, and Supergirl is scheduled for June 2026, several other announced titles remain in development limbo. The Brave and the Bold has been among the most watched projects without concrete progress.
Creative Team Reunion
Hodson will reunite with Andy Muschietti, who directed her Flash screenplay. The pairing might raise eyebrows given The Flash's poor box office performance and mixed critical reception. Yet Gunn previously called The Flash "one of the best superhero movies I've ever seen," suggesting he sees potential in their collaboration.
According to industry sources, Warner Bros. is taking a deliberate approach to development. No finished draft is expected soon. Hodson reportedly began work on the script in fall 2025, though the timeline suggests she may be the second writer attached to the project.
Behind the Scenes Development
Back in February 2025, Gunn mentioned The Brave and the Bold had a writer but declined to name them, saying it would put "too much pressure on the guy." The male pronoun hints that Hodson replaced an earlier screenwriter who either departed or was replaced as the project shifted direction.
Hodson was part of the writers' room Gunn assembled when he took over DC Studios. Her previous Batman work includes an unmade Batman Beyond script for the DCEU that earned praise within the studio. Her Birds of Prey stands as one of the stronger DCEU entries, while her Bumblebee script is widely considered the best live-action Transformers film.
Release Timeline and Strategy
The Brave and the Bold won't arrive before 2028. This deliberate scheduling avoids competing with Matt Reeves' The Batman - Part II, set for October 1, 2027. Gunn and Peter Safran want to keep Reeves' Batman universe separate from the DCU, allowing both franchises to develop independently.
Gunn has confirmed he won't cast Batman for the upcoming Superman film, keeping the character's DCU debut reserved for The Brave and the Bold. This approach gives the new Batman room for the more fantastical elements that distinguish the DCU from Reeves' grounded crime saga.
