The sequel to the hit horror film is shrouded in mystery, with star Josh Hutcherson calling it 'top secret level 1 million.' Blumhouse is cranking up the fear factor with twice the animatronics and a much darker story. What new horrors await when the film premieres on December 5?

Blumhouse is keeping a tight lid on the follow-up to its smash hit video game adaptation, which arrived more than two years ago. The studio's approach to Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is so secretive, that star Josh Hutcherson has labeled it "top secret level 1 million," assuring fans the wait for big reveals will be worthwhile. "Every time there's like, a new trailer or a new poster coming out, the emails that they send, of the intents of, like, do not let anyone see this before this time," Hutcherson told GamesRadar+. "Like, they're hardcore."

The story picks up a year after Mike and his younger sister Abby escaped the nightmarish Freddy Fazzbear's Pizzeria. In the new film, the siblings find themselves unexpectedly dragged back into the perilous world of the animatronics, with plenty of new surprises in store.

Cranking Up the Terror

Hutcherson teased that the filmmakers are amplifying everything that fans loved about the original. "Stuff goes down. It's crazy," he said. "Everything that really worked in the first movie, we took that and just cranked it way up. We have like, double the amount of animatronics. The movie's way scarier, a lot more jump scares. It's dark. You get into the psychological shit of the characters. It's great."

One of the most significant enhancements appears to be the animatronics themselves. The sequel is confirmed to include both the withered and Toy versions of the terrifying machines, and it seems likely that even more characters from the game series will make an appearance.

Next-Level Creatures

The practical effects are getting a major boost. "The animatronics are amazing. They're even more terrifying the first one, that's for sure," Hutcherson explained. "There's one animatronic that needs I think nine people just to operate because there's cables and rods and remotes and there's two heads. What [Jim] Henson does with these creatures is next level. It's incredible."

Hints from the official trailer suggest the animatronics might escape the confines of the pizzeria and venture into the outside world. Director Emma Tammi addressed this possibility, stating, "They're out for blood… There's, there's some new elements in the fold. So I think, you know, as with any Five Nights at Freddy's game, you know, not to get too close. You know, that's probably no good if you're face-to-face with an animatronic and you want to get the heck out of there. But, I think the way in which they're operating is, you know, an exciting twist in the sequel compared to the first one."

The highly anticipated sequel is set to premiere in theaters on December 5.
