The fantasy franchise continues growing with confirmed series, animated shows, and a potential movie in development, despite the original series ending years ago.

The fantasy epic may have concluded its main storyline, but George R.R. Martin's brutal medieval world continues expanding across multiple platforms. Seven distinct projects are currently moving through various stages of development, ranging from confirmed release dates to early conceptual phases.

Fans waiting for Martin's next novel will find plenty of screen content to satisfy their appetite for Westeros drama. Production teams have been busy developing everything from prequel series to animated adventures, ensuring the franchise maintains its momentum well into the future.

Confirmed 2026 Releases

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms arrives January 18, 2026, adapting Martin's "The Hedge Knight" novella. The series follows Ser Duncan the Tall, portrayed by Peter Claffey, alongside his young companion Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell. Set approximately one century after House of the Dragon events, viewers can expect encounters with multiple Targaryen family members. Martin collaborates with Ira Parker as writer and executive producer.

House of the Dragon returns for its third season during summer 2026, with filming already completed and post-production underway. Reports suggest the opening episode will feature The Battle of the Gullet, drawn directly from Martin's "Fire & Blood" source material. The Targaryen civil war between Blacks and Greens continues captivating audiences, with a fourth season already receiving approval.

Projects in Development

Aegon's Conquest remains shrouded in mystery, with Mattson Tomlin attached as writer. This potential series would explore the franchise's earliest timeline events, following Aegon and his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya as they establish Targaryen rule over Westeros. The conquest essentially launches the entire saga, making it a prequel to all existing content.

The Sea Snake has transitioned from live-action to animation due to budget considerations. Martin explained that depicting constant sea voyages and diverse port locations would prove prohibitively expensive in traditional format. Steve Toussaint's Corlys Velaryon character from House of the Dragon would anchor this maritime adventure series.

Ten Thousand Ships focuses on Nymeria, the historical figure inspiring Arya's direwolf name. After losing her homeland of Rhoyne, Nymeria leads her people across oceans to establish themselves in Dorne. Playwright Eboni Booth has taken over writing duties after Brian Helgeland's initial version wasn't selected. "She's an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with," Martin noted about the new approach.

Future Possibilities

A theatrical film remains in extremely early development stages, lacking attached writers, directors, or cast members. Warner Bros. has quietly begun exploring cinematic possibilities within Martin's universe, though specific plot details remain undisclosed.

The Golden Empire represents another animated venture set in Yi Ti, an eastern region beyond Qarth never previously explored in live-action. Martin has expressed enthusiasm about the concept art and animation quality, though specific details remain confidential.

Several announced projects have been canceled, including Flea Bottom, Empire of Ash, Bloodmoon, and Snow, demonstrating the competitive development process behind bringing these stories to screen.
