HBO Redesigned the Hogwarts Crests. One Change Fixes a 25-Year-Old Film Error.
HBO unveiled redesigned Hogwarts house crests for its Harry Potter series at a Back to Hogwarts event in Australia on Monday. They are flatter, thinner and circular where the films were heraldic. One change is a genuine correction to the books; the rest have split the fanbase.
The new marks drop the shield entirely. Each house animal now sits inside a plain coloured circle in thin line art, with light floral work and the traditional house colour retained. Several outlets compared the result to banner design rather than heraldry.
The one substantive change
Ravenclaw's sigil is an eagle again. In Rowling's books Ravenclaw's symbol is an eagle; the films substituted a raven, and two decades of merchandise followed the films. The series has put the eagle back. That is a small, checkable proof of the "faithful adaptation" claim the production has been making since 2023.
It is also the only design decision with a stated justification, because HBO has issued no rationale at all for the redesign. Multiple outlets note the absence explicitly.
Do not confuse this with the school crest
Separately, the series replaces Hogwarts' four-quartered coat of arms with a golden letter "H" styled as a tree — roots below, branches above — first glimpsed in the March teaser on Hermione's robe in muted scarlet. A more ornate gold crest also appears on Harry's acceptance letter, so the show seems to use more than one mark.
Worth flagging: the line circulating that the H was "intentionally designed as a simple, striking H rather than a traditional coat of arms" traces to a fan account, not to HBO or the official brand. No showrunner or designer has explained it.
Where the series actually stands
- Premieres 25 December 2026 on HBO and HBO Max globally.
- Eight episodes, roughly eight hours, adapting Philosopher's Stone — against the 2001 film's 2h32m.
- Francesca Gardiner showruns; Mark Mylod and Benjamin Caron direct. Jon Brown co-showruns season two.
- Filmed at Leavesden from 14 July 2025, with location work at London Zoo, King's Cross, Oxford, Windsor Great Park and Cornwall.
- Season two is ordered (Chamber of Secrets), with Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart replacing Nicholas Hoult. Seasons three to seven are not ordered.
- Cast: Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout as the leads; John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (Snape), Nick Frost (Hagrid), Luke Thallon (Quirrell), Johnny Flynn (Lucius Malfoy), Katherine Parkinson (Molly Weasley) — and Warwick Davis returning as Flitwick from the films.
The number to be careful with
The widely repeated "$100M per episode / $5.6bn total" figure has no trade source. It circulates through aggregators. What is on the record is HBO Max's Sarah Aubrey calling it "a financial investment we normally wouldn't make," and cinematographer Adriano Goldman saying he "wouldn't be surprised if it has the biggest construction budget ever… for streaming." That is all.
The pitch is fidelity — eight hours instead of two and a half, Peeves restored, the potions riddle back, age-accurate casting. The visual identity is going the other way: darker, plainer, less ornate than the films. The series is being more faithful to the text and less faithful to the look, and it has not explained why.
Scale of the interest
The March teaser did 277M+ organic views in 48 hours — HBO and HBO Max's most-watched trailer ever, by more than double. For context, the eight films took about $7.1 billion worldwide, with Deathly Hallows Part 2 alone at $1.31bn. Philosopher's Stone returns to cinemas for its 25th anniversary this week.
A new trailer was expected Tuesday, tied to the official Back to Hogwarts showcase. Streaming note: US rights to the films rotate between HBO Max and Peacock and sources currently conflict on where they sit — check before you plan a rewatch.
