Warner Bros. is developing the Game of Thrones prequel about Aegon's Conquest as both an HBO series and a major theatrical release, similar in scale to Dune.

Warner Bros. is taking a dual approach with its upcoming Game of Thrones prequel about Aegon's Conquest. The project is moving forward simultaneously as both a potential HBO drama series and a massive theatrical film comparable to Dune's scope.

The story centers on the first King Aegon, who conquered Westeros alongside his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya. This conquest happened a century before House of the Dragon's timeline and three centuries before the original Game of Thrones events. The trio managed to subdue six of the seven kingdoms, though Dorne maintained its independence for years afterward.

The Prophecy Behind the Conquest

House of the Dragon revealed Aegon's true motivation for conquest. He foresaw humanity's end through a winter from the North. A Targaryen needed to sit on the Iron Throne to unite the Seven Kingdoms against this threat.

This prophecy became known as the Song of Ice and Fire. George R.R. Martin named his entire book series after this concept.

Development Details and Dragon Action

Mattson Tomlin, who wrote The Batman 2, was attached to the project when it was first announced in 2024. Since then, updates have been scarce.

The spin-off would feature extensive dragon sequences. The three Targaryens rode the legendary dragons Vhagar, Meraxes, and Balerion. This dragon-heavy content makes it a natural candidate for the first Game of Thrones theatrical release. HBO has already proven it can handle large-scale dragon action through House of the Dragon and later Game of Thrones seasons.

Other Projects in Development

The previously canceled Jon Snow sequel series might return to development. This time, it could include Arya Stark and take place in Essos.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres January 18 on HBO in the US and January 19 on Sky/NOW in the UK. House of the Dragon season 3 is also scheduled for this year.
