It: Welcome to Derry Director Explains Mysterious Finale Fog Connection
Andy Muschietti clarifies the relationship between the eerie fog in the season finale and Stephen King's The Mist, revealing surprising interdimensional connections.
Throughout its eight-episode journey, It: Welcome to Derry packed in countless Easter eggs, from obscure novel references to broader nods toward Stephen King's universe, including Carrie and The Shawshank Redemption. During the season finale, when General Shaw and military forces disrupted It's 27-year slumber, an ominous fog rolled across Derry. The haze bore a striking resemblance to the mist from King's 1980 novel The Mist, where David Drayton battles terrifying creatures while trapped in a grocery store.
Director Addresses Fan Theories
Director Andy Muschietti recently addressed speculation about the fog's connection to The Mist in a candid interview. His explanation might leave fans scratching their heads. "Of course, in The Mist, they say that the mist comes from the Todash Field, the same interdimensional plane that It is from," Muschietti explained. "So it's unrelated, but it's also related."
The filmmaker wanted the fog to serve a specific visual purpose within his story. "I wanted to use the fog to visually illustrate the expansion of the clouds that surround the Dead Lights. When we see the meteor crash into Derry in episode 4, we see the three Dead Lights dancing around this cloud of fog. The physical element is established there, and for this story, I wanted to show that it is an expansive force."
Future Seasons on the Horizon
While HBO Max hasn't officially announced It: Welcome to Derry season 2, Muschietti seems confident about the show's future. He's already outlined a three-season blueprint that will take viewers deeper into Derry's dark history.
The upcoming season will transport audiences to the Great Depression era. "It takes place during the Depression in Derry, and there are some new characters and some characters from this season as well, but younger versions of them," Muschietti revealed. Fans can expect to see familiar faces, just with fewer wrinkles and a lot more innocence before Derry's evil touched their lives.
