The Jon Snow actor didn't hold back when discussing the massive online petition that called for HBO to redo the controversial final season.

Kit Harington isn't backing down from his harsh words about Game of Thrones fans who demanded a complete do-over of the show's final season. The actor, who brought Jon Snow to life throughout the series' eight-season run, didn't mince words when discussing the controversy.

"That genuinely angered me," Harington told The New York Times. "Like, how dare you? Sorry, that's just how I feel. I think it was a level of idiocy that can only come about through social media."

The Petition That Sparked Outrage

The backlash reached fever pitch when nearly 2 mn people signed a Change.org petition demanding HBO remake the entire final season. The petition called for "a final season that makes sense," with creator Dylan D. pulling no punches in his criticism.

"David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material," the petition stated. The final season became a cautionary tale about disappointing endings, referenced even when Stranger Things fans expressed similar frustrations.

Behind the Scenes Fallout

Production mishaps plagued the season. Viewers struggled with poorly lit battle sequences. A Starbucks cup accidentally made it into one scene. Many felt character arcs that took years to develop got rushed, unsatisfying conclusions.

The criticism hit Harington hard. He told his agent he wanted a "no swords" rule for future projects. Ironically, his Marvel character Dane Whitman was being positioned as the Black Knight in Eternals' post-credits scene.

What's Next for Westeros

George R.R. Martin's book series remains unfinished. The author called writing The Winds of Winter "the curse of my life" during a recent Time interview. Fans still don't know how A Song of Fire and Ice will actually end on the page.

HBO keeps expanding the franchise though. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuts January 18. House of the Dragon season 3 arrives this summer. The network clearly believes there's still appetite for Westeros stories, despite the original series' controversial finale.
