Mads Mikkelsen Reveals Rogue One Script Was Never Finished
The Danish actor opens up about the chaotic production process behind the 2016 Star Wars film, revealing constant rewrites and improvisational filmmaking that kept the cast guessing until the very end.
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen has pulled back the curtain on what sounds like a pretty wild production experience while making Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. According to the actor, the screenplay was constantly evolving throughout filming, and he's not even sure they ever nailed down a final version.
"For a Star Wars script, it was surprisingly unfinished," Mikkelsen shared in a recent interview. "It kept changing. One would think that was already done. I don't think they ever locked in a draft. I think they kept working on it and improvised and went back and reshot stuff. And then came up with a better idea."
Behind the Scenes of a Billion-Dollar Hit
The 2016 film, helmed by director Gareth Edwards, takes place just seven days before the original Star Wars movie kicks off. The story centers on rebels Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, and Cassian Andor, portrayed by Diego Luna, as they attempt to steal the blueprints for the Empire's massive Death Star weapon.
Mikkelsen took on the role of Galen Erso, Jyn's father and the scientist who reluctantly helped create the Death Star's devastating capabilities. Despite the apparently chaotic writing process, the film became a massive commercial success, pulling in over $1 billion worldwide against its roughly $300 million production budget.
A Character's Legacy Lives On
While Mikkelsen's character doesn't make physical appearances in the Andor television series, Galen Erso's influence continues to be felt throughout the show's storyline, with multiple references to his work and sacrifice.
Despite all the behind-the-scenes uncertainty he experienced, Mikkelsen maintains a positive outlook on the final product. "I think it turned out to be a really nice film," he added.
What's Next for the Galaxy Far, Far Away
Star Wars fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming years. The Mandalorian and Grogu, featuring Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver, is set to hit movie theaters on May 22, 2026. Meanwhile, director Shawn Levy is currently working on Star Wars: Starfighter, which will star Ryan Gosling.
For those wanting to revisit the film that sparked all this discussion, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.
