The 2000 disaster blockbuster starring Wahlberg and Clooney finally lands on streaming after years of digital-only availability. Based on the true story of a fishing crew's deadly encounter with nature's fury.

Mark Wahlberg was climbing Hollywood's ladder in the late 90s. Fear, Boogie Nights, Three Kings. Each role pushed him closer to leading man status. Then came Wolfgang Petersen's ocean disaster epic, giving Wahlberg space to stretch his dramatic muscles beyond the tough-guy persona.

The Perfect Storm crashed into theaters June 30, 2000. Critics weren't blown away, but audiences showed up. Opening weekend brought $41.3 mn. The final tally hit $328 mn worldwide against a $120 mn production budget.

True Story Behind the Waves

Sebastian Junger's book provided the source material. William D. Wittliff handled the screenplay adaptation. The story centers on the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing vessel that vanished during a catastrophic nor'easter in October 1991.

George Clooney leads the ensemble cast alongside Diane Lane, William Fichtner, Karen Allen, Bob Gunton, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and John C. Reilly. The film balances spectacular disaster sequences with blue-collar drama, showing how ordinary people risk everything to provide for their families.

Streaming Availability Changes

For years, viewers could only rent or buy the movie digitally. That changed January 1, 2026, when Peacock added the title to its streaming library. The move gives subscribers access to one of the early 2000s' biggest disaster spectacles.

The official synopsis reads: "Based on a true story, The Perfect Storm tells the tale of the courageous men and women who risk their lives every working day, pitting their fishing boats and rescue vessels against the capricious forces of nature. Their worst fears are realized at sea on Halloween of 1991, when they are confronted by three raging weather fronts which unexpectedly collide to produce the greatest, fiercest storm in modern history."

Wahlberg's Current Projects

The actor keeps busy with upcoming films including Balls Up, By Any Means, and Weekend Warriors. Release dates remain unannounced. Fans can catch his storm-battling performance streaming now.
