Martin Reveals Dozen Dunk and Egg Stories for Future HBO Seasons
The Game of Thrones creator has outlined up to 12 unpublished novellas that could fuel years of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms content, with two seasons already in production.
George R.R. Martin has provided HBO with outlines for up to a dozen unpublished novellas that could fuel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for years ahead. Showrunner Ira Parker disclosed that the fantasy author shared extensive story ideas extending Dunk and Egg's adventures throughout their entire lives.
"He has shared with me about 10 to 12 more little outlines for books, for novellas, taking Dunk and Egg all the way through their life," Parker told The National. The showrunner confirmed two seasons are currently in production, with hopes for continued expansion of the series.
From Page to Screen Adaptation
"Right now, we're focused on one, and we'll see how the world responds to that. We're making two at the moment," Parker explained. "I hope we get to make as many of these as possible." The showrunner expressed enthusiasm for working within Martin's fantasy universe, calling it a wonderful story worth exploring further.
Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg collection currently includes three published novellas from 2010: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. The 85-page Hedge Knight serves as source material for the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Timeline and Characters
The HBO series takes place 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It follows struggling hedge knight Dunk, known as Ser Duncan the Tall and played by Peter Claffey, alongside his young squire Egg, portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell. The story centers on Dunk's attempts to establish his reputation among more established knights during tournament competition.
Whether Martin will actually write those additional 10 to 12 novellas remains uncertain, given fans are still awaiting The Winds of Winter. The screen adaptations may proceed regardless of publication status.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuts on HBO and Sky on January 18. The series represents another expansion of the Westeros universe beyond the original Game of Thrones series.
