Nia DaCosta reveals her interest in bringing Robert Kirkman's brutal superhero comic to live-action, while industry insiders suggest Zack Snyder might be the better choice for the gritty adaptation.

Nine years have passed since Hollywood first announced plans for a live-action Invincible movie. Now Nia DaCosta, who directed The Marvels, wants to tackle Robert Kirkman's violent superhero saga. During a recent Reddit discussion about her upcoming film 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, DaCosta shared her vision for adapting the acclaimed comic series.

"I would LOVE to direct a live action film version of Robert Kirkman's Invincible. The comic and cartoon are amazing. I know exactly how I'd want to translate that world, and that amazing father/son relationship, to screen. I also just love the idea of making something in a superhero world that has some real grit and viscera–and s-x!"

Her enthusiasm comes at a time when her superhero credentials remain questionable. The Marvels received mixed reactions from audiences and critics alike. Whether The Bone Temple changes public perception of her directorial abilities remains to be seen.

Live-Action Plans Still in Limbo

The original Invincible movie announcement came nearly a decade ago. Nothing concrete has materialized since then. Kirkman has focused primarily on the animated series, which could run seven or eight seasons to cover all 144 comic issues.

The animated show continues drawing praise from critics and fans. Its cultural impact grows with each season. This success makes a live-action version less urgent but not impossible.

Kirkman addressed the movie's status recently, explaining the TV show creates both opportunities and obstacles for film development. "Unfortunately, there's not much I can say. I will say that the television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie. That's kind of where I have to leave it, unfortunately. It's still early going. I would be shocked if it doesn't happen one day."

Snyder's Style Matches Invincible's Brutality

While DaCosta expresses interest, Zack Snyder might suit this project better. His track record with comic book movies shows mixed results, but his visual approach aligns with Invincible's tone. The comic doesn't shy away from graphic violence or mature themes.

Snyder's biggest weakness has been his writing. When he works from stronger scripts, like Man of Steel or Dawn of the Dead, his visual storytelling shines. His ability to craft intense action sequences could translate perfectly to Invincible's world.

The comic demands someone who can handle operatic violence and emotional weight. Snyder's experience with both elements makes him a natural fit. His style could capture the series' unique blend of superhero spectacle and brutal reality.

Season 4 of the animated series approaches, giving fans plenty to anticipate. The live-action adaptation remains distant, but Kirkman's confidence suggests it will happen eventually. Whether DaCosta, Snyder, or another director takes the helm, Invincible's transition to live-action seems inevitable.
