A prank by Matt Damon's artist brother at MIT involving a fake mathematical equation became the inspiration for one of Good Will Hunting's most memorable moments.

The friendship between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck changed Hollywood forever when Good Will Hunting catapulted them from struggling actors to A-list stars. The duo shared everything during their early days - an apartment, a joint bank account, and dreams of making it big. Their gamble paid off spectacularly.

Kevin Smith helped get their script to Miramax after other studios passed. The result? A movie that swept awards season and launched careers that have lasted decades.

The Mathematical Prank That Sparked Cinema Gold

Good Will Hunting's famous chalkboard scene shows Will solving impossible equations that should stump MIT's best students for months. He cracks them overnight. The second time, professors catch him in action.

Many believed the scene drew from George Dantzig's real story - a student who accidentally solved unsolved mathematical problems thinking they were homework assignments. Damon tells a different tale.

During a commencement speech at MIT, Damon revealed the true inspiration. His brother Kyle, a sculptor and artist, visited a physicist friend at the university and spotted blackboards lining the Infinite Corridor.

An Artist's Elaborate Hoax

"Kyle was visiting a physicist we knew at MIT, and he was walking down the Infinite Corridor," Damon explained. "He saw those blackboards that line the halls. So my brother, who's an artist, picked up some chalk and wrote an incredibly elaborate, totally fake, version of an equation."

The fake equation looked so convincing that nobody erased it for months. "It was so cool and so completely insane that no one erased it for months," Damon said.

Kyle later discovered his prank had consequences. Students spent countless hours trying to solve his meaningless scribbles. "Blackboards running down the hall" filled with attempted solutions to a problem that existed only in an artist's imagination.

A Career-Defining Achievement

Good Will Hunting earned Damon and Affleck Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay. Robin Williams won Best Supporting Actor. The film received nine Oscar nominations total, including Best Picture.

Damon has built an impressive resume since then. The Bourne franchise made him an action star. Recent dramatic roles in The Martian and Oppenheimer showcased his range. Yet Good Will Hunting remains special.

The movie launched multiple careers simultaneously. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Casey Affleck all became major stars. Like many artists' debut works, this first major success might still be their best.
