New 97% Rated Horror Teaser Shows a Wish Spiraling into Terror
A new horror sensation that captivated festival audiences has just released its first look. A young man makes a simple request, but the chilling phone call that follows suggests he's unleashed something he can't control. What happens when a dream come true becomes a living nightmare?
A highly anticipated horror movie that wowed audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival last September has finally dropped its first preview. For genre fans who couldn't be there, this is the first chance to see what all the excitement is about. The movie, titled Obsession, centers on a hopeless romantic whose deepest desire takes a horrifying turn.
A Chilling Phone Call
The cryptic teaser opens with a character named Bear, played by Michael Johnston, sitting in a dark car and making a tense phone call. "What's up?" a voice on the other end asks flatly. Bear nervously responds, "I was calling to see if there was any way I could alter a wish?"
The conversation quickly becomes unsettling. The person on the phone offers to cancel the wish, causing Bear to panic and insist he only wants to make a few changes.
"I'm sorry, we don't really do that," the mysterious voice replies. "If you have any questions about how the wish works or if you read the back of the box..." The exchange culminates in Bear desperately whispering, "Is it even real? Is her love... real?" The sinister reply leaves a lasting impression: "Just because you chose this for her doesn't make it less real." The brief clip ends there, leaving viewers both spooked and curious.
From Festival Hit to Horror Sensation
Written and directed by Curry Barker, known for Milk & Serial, Obsession is already a critical darling, boasting an incredible 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also secured the #2 spot on Letterboxd's list of top horror movies for 2025, for context Ryan Coogler's Sinners was #1, followed by The Plague at #3, It Ends at #4, and Zach Cregger's Weapons at #5.
While the teaser gives off a vibe similar to It Follows or a Stephen King story like I Know What You Need, Barker revealed an unexpected source of inspiration. He explained that the idea for the script came to him after he watched an episode of The Simpsons where "Bart gets a monkey paw and causes a bunch of chaos."
