Ryan Hurst Cast as Kratos in Prime Video's God of War Series
The Sons of Anarchy actor, who voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarok, will bring the Spartan warrior to life in the upcoming streaming adaptation following Kratos and Atreus on their mythological journey.
Prime Video has selected Ryan Hurst to portray Kratos in its upcoming God of War streaming adaptation. Fans of the video game series already know Hurst's voice work as Thor from 2022's God of War: Ragnarok. His live-action credits include Gerry Bertier in Remember the Titans and Harry 'Opie' Winston during Sons of Anarchy's five-season run.
The God of War franchise spans 10 titles when including spin-offs, browser games, and mobile versions. The series launched in 2005 and transformed Kratos into a recognizable gaming icon through compelling storylines and his reputation as an unstoppable warrior.
From Spartan Warrior to Norse Mythology
Prime Video describes Kratos as both Spartan by birth and divine by nature. Military culture shaped his early years before he commanded armies defending his homeland. Everything changed when he struck a deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, trading his soul for battlefield victory.
The streaming series will focus on the father-son relationship between Kratos and Atreus. Their quest centers on spreading Faye's ashes, Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother. During their travels, Kratos attempts to guide his son toward becoming a better deity while Atreus helps his father discover his humanity.
No Release Date Set
Prime Video hasn't announced when the God of War series will premiere. The casting of Hurst represents a significant step forward for the project, bringing someone familiar with the franchise's recent direction to the lead role.
The choice connects the streaming adaptation directly to the modern God of War games, which shifted from Greek to Norse mythology. This transition marked a creative turning point for the franchise, focusing more on character development and family dynamics.
