Scarlett Johansson's Potential Batman 2 Role Shakes Up the DCU
After her iconic run in the Marvel universe, Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in talks to join the world of Gotham. As fans buzz with theories about who she might play in The Batman Part II, a surprising twist in the film's casting could point to an unexpected and major role for the star.
Scarlett Johansson, celebrated for her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is now making headlines with a potential jump to the DC Universe. The actress is reportedly in negotiations to join the cast of The Batman Part II, the sequel to Matt Reeves’ critically acclaimed 2022 film. The news has ignited a firestorm of excitement and speculation among comic book fans.
Fan Theories Run Wild
Almost immediately after the news broke, fans began debating which Gotham City character Johansson could bring to life. The most popular fan-casting choice has been Poison Ivy, the iconic villainess who can control plants and is immune to all toxins. The character was last seen on the big screen when Uma Thurman portrayed her in the 1997 movie Batman & Robin.
Other theories suggest she could play Talia al Ghul, the deadly daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, or perhaps even the mystical hero Zatanna. However, another piece of casting news has complicated these predictions and pointed toward a very different possibility.
A Casting Shake-Up Changes Everything
While the buzz around Johansson’s involvement grew, a separate report confirmed that a familiar face would not be returning. Zoe Kravitz, who played Catwoman in the first film, will reportedly not reprise her role in the sequel. Her character was a central part of The Batman, and her absence leaves a significant void.
This development has led many to believe that Johansson might be taking over the role of Catwoman. It's a strong possibility that the Lost in Translation star will be the next person to don the iconic catsuit. With her official role still under wraps, it's tough to say for sure what her part in Gotham's next chapter will be.
The Batman Sequel Moves into Production
Progress on the highly anticipated sequel is finally moving forward. The Batman Part II is slated to enter its pre-production phase in January 2026. This marks the official start of the project after a nearly five-year gap. Principal photography is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2026, at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in London.
Director Matt Reeves, who co-wrote the screenplay, has confirmed the script is complete and says he is “proud” of it. He also shared Robert Pattinson's reaction:
Rob was super excited, I feel really excited about the idea that it’s gonna be, that we feel like we can reach farther and do even more than we did in the first one. And, I’m really excited to get back together with everybody that we made the movie with, and, it’s gonna be fun.
With the production schedule firming up, the film is expected to meet its current release date of October 1, 2027.
