Simu Liu hints at significant character development for Shang-Chi when he returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Avengers film.

The wait for Shang-Chi's return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been longer than fans hoped. His solo debut ranked among the strongest Marvel releases following Endgame, making his absence from subsequent projects particularly noticeable. That drought ends with Avengers: Doomsday, where the martial arts hero will stand alongside established Avengers members.

Simu Liu recently discussed his character's upcoming appearance in an interview with Comic Book. The actor revealed significant changes await audiences when they reconnect with the Ten Rings wielder. "He's older," Liu stated. "I'm older, so getting to bring a little bit more of a quality of self-assurance is always great, especially because Shang was such a fish out of water."

Time Jump Brings Maturity

The actor confirmed a time jump will occur between his solo film and the next Avengers installment. "There's a little bit of a jump in time, so I think we'll meet him at a place where he's feeling a little more lived in with who he is and his responsibilities," Liu explained.

This development suggests the character has grown comfortable with his powers and role as a hero. His original story focused heavily on discovering his identity and accepting his family's complicated legacy.

Keeping Secrets Under Wraps

Despite the film's 2026 release date, Liu remains cautious about revealing plot details. The actor learned this lesson after accidentally sharing costume information during a previous interview.

"I never know when something I say is going to get picked up into a soundbite," he admitted. "I think I was freezing cold on the rooftop of the Empire State Building, and they were like, 'What about his costume?' And I was like, 'Oh, it's new.' It just became an unstoppable maelstrom of messed-up lines."

The experience taught him to be more reserved about discussing upcoming projects. "I am very reserved about what to say about it now," Liu noted.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18, 2026. Marvel Studios will likely reveal more details about Shang-Chi's role as the release date approaches.
