Warner Bros. and Fathom Entertainment are bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary trilogy back to the big screen for its 25th anniversary celebration. The complete Lord of the Rings collection returns to theaters across America with both extended and standard versions.
Extended Cuts Hit Theaters First
Extended versions of all three films screen from January 16-19, 2026. Standard theatrical cuts follow January 23-25, 2026. Select theaters will offer D-Box immersive presentations for the full experience.
AMC locations plan special LOTR-themed popcorn buckets and other collectible concession items. Die-hard fans should check local theater participation before making plans.
Aragorn Actor Reflects on Unexpected Success
Viggo Mortensen, who portrayed Aragorn throughout the trilogy, admits he never anticipated the films' massive global impact. The trilogy earned 17 Oscar wins combined across all three installments.
"I'm honored to have been part of that process. We never knew it would be that way, that it would have such an impact globally. It was great, and it obviously gave me lots of opportunities. A lot of good things came from it," Mortensen shared in a past interview.
His performance helped transform Peter Jackson's vision into a worldwide phenomenon that continues drawing new audiences decades later.
Author's War Experience Shaped the Epic
Tolkien's World War I service deeply influenced his storytelling approach. After losing close friends and fellow soldiers, he created characters reflecting honor, duty, and integrity.
His background in Norse mythology, Anglo-Saxon literature, and Germanic epics provided the foundation. Combined with his linguistic expertise, these elements formed the blueprint for Middle-earth's rich world-building.
Real-life experiences mixed with timeless heroic themes created something special. Tolkien placed these universal stories within a completely original fantasy setting.
