A decade after his fantasy epic first hit theaters, the star is finally returning to one of his most personal roles. He has just dropped major news about the upcoming follow-up, including its official name and some tantalizing hints about where the story is headed next.

After a ten-year wait, a cult favorite is making a comeback. The action-fantasy project is getting a second chance, thanks to a surprising surge in popularity on streaming platforms. The star recently took to social media to pull back the curtain on the follow-up, sharing the first official details and the film's new moniker.

A New Chapter for an Immortal Warrior

The 2015 movie, directed by Breck Eisner, blended high-octane action with fantasy elements and featured a cast including Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood, and Michael Caine. It followed an immortal warrior named Kaulder, cursed to battle witches through the ages. The story was deeply personal for the lead, drawing inspiration from his own Dungeons & Dragons campaigns.

Despite his passion, the movie struggled at the time, earning a dismal 18% "rotten" score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a lackluster $146.9 million at the box office. However, a new wave of viewers discovering the film on streaming has breathed new life into the franchise, officialy paving the way for another installment.

Secrets from the Script

On his Instagram, the lead actor posted a picture of the script's cover page, showing the sequel's name as Kaulder the Immortal – The Lion’s Oath. The image also included a cryptic quote that hints at the upcoming story's direction: “Some debts take centuries to pay.”

The first page of the script shows Kaulder in a conversation with “Young Dolan.” This almost certainly refers to the character played by Michael Caine, the 36th Dolan, a priest assigned to help Kaulder monitor the witch world. It has been confirmed that the legendary Michael Caine will come out of retirement for the role, and this scene suggests his character will be central to the plot. The script then jumps forward 80 years, which strongly implies we might see a de-aged Caine in a flashback sequence.

From Box Office Dud to Streaming Hit

The star has been eager to revisit this world for years, and his wish was finally granted. Adam Fogelsen, the chair of Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group, recently confirmed that the next chapter is officially in development, crediting the movie's unexpected streaming success for the decision.

Fogelsen stated, "The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world. Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I'm thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale."
