Actress Mia McKenna-Bruce opens up about portraying Maureen Starkey in Sam Mendes's ambitious Beatles film project, sharing intimate details about the drummer's first wife and her own preparation challenges.

Actress Mia McKenna-Bruce has shared her thoughts on bringing Maureen Starkey to life in Sam Mendes's upcoming Beatles film series. The performer discussed her role as Ringo Starr's first wife during a recent Sunday Times conversation about the ambitious four-part cinematic project set for 2028 release.

Currently featured in Netflix's Agatha Christie adaptation Seven Dials, McKenna-Bruce described both the excitement and anxiety of stepping into Starkey's shoes. Though she hasn't crossed paths with Starr or his relatives yet, she's gathered plenty of information about the woman she's portraying.

Understanding Maureen's Character

"Someone described her as the person who, if she went to a party, would be the one that would go up to the person who was on their own. She had a huge heart," McKenna-Bruce explained. This description helped shape her understanding of Starkey's compassionate nature.

Maureen wed Starr in 1965 at just 18 years old. Their son Zak came along quickly, followed by Jason and daughter Lee. The marriage lasted a decade before ending in 1975. She maintained strong friendships with other Beatles wives, including Cynthia Lennon and Pattie Boyd, with Aimee Lou Wood taking on Boyd's role in the films.

Facing the Pressure

Speaking with Stylist magazine, McKenna-Bruce admitted feeling overwhelmed by the massive production. "When we started, I thought, 'I'm way out of my depth'," she confessed. "To get to be involved in telling this story... it's a proper 'pinch me'."

The actress acknowledged her struggles with self-doubt. "I have to accept that I'm going to feel imposter syndrome – look at what we're doing! But that's OK – when I tell myself not to feel like that, that's when I spiral."

Family Approval

Ringo's son Zak Starkey recently shared his father's reaction to the production. The drummer visited the set and came away impressed, particularly with Barry Keoghan's performance as him. "My dad said that he went to the set and that it was amazing. It really blew him away. He was pretty impressed with what he saw," Zak revealed.
