The Hollywood star opens up about his tearful response to the sci-fi masterpiece and shares details about his upcoming collaboration with the acclaimed director on a mythical adventure.

The Good Will Hunting star got unexpectedly emotional while discussing his work with the acclaimed filmmaker behind The Dark Knight trilogy. During a recent interview promoting his Netflix project The Rip, the 55-year-old actor admitted that rewatching the 2014 space drama brought him to tears.

The confession came when asked to pick his top choice from the director's filmography. After considering the dream-heist thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, he settled on the cosmic adventure that earned over $773mn worldwide from its $165mn production budget.

Father's Fear Triggers Emotional Response

The Boston native explained his connection to the story went beyond his brief appearance as the duplicitous Dr. Mann. Reading the screenplay initially moved him to tears because of its central theme about parental sacrifice.

"I love them all is the truth. Interstellar, I watched again when it was re-released and I don't think I could see it the first time because I was in it — a small role, but I was still in it and had read the script within a year of seeing it, so I don't think I really saw it," he shared.

"I remember the experience of reading the script and sobbing, because I think it's about a father missing the life of his daughter and my kids were young, and that was such a terrifying thought to me that it really moved me. I had that experience again watching the film a decade later. I was really moved by that one."

Time's Cruel Mathematics

The space epic follows Matthew McConaughey's character Joseph Cooper, who leaves Earth on a desperate mission to find humanity a new home. Due to the physics of time dilation near massive gravitational fields, Cooper's journey spans roughly 90 Earth years.

When he finally returns, his son Tom has died of old age. His daughter Murph lies dying when they reunite. The cruel mathematics of space travel rob him of watching his children grow up.

Epic Collaboration on Ancient Tale

The actor and director are preparing their third project together this summer. Their latest venture adapts Homer's ancient poem about Odysseus, the king trying to reach home after the Trojan War.

This marks their biggest collaboration since the atomic bomb biopic that swept awards season. The new project features an ensemble cast including Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, and Robert Pattinson.

The production took the team across multiple continents to capture the mythical journey. For the lead actor, the experience surpassed everything in his decades-long career.

"It was absolutely the pinnacle of my entire career. I loved every minute of it. I just loved it," he said about filming the ambitious adaptation.
