The Hollywood veteran opened up about the permanent damage of public shaming during a candid podcast appearance, drawing from his own brush with controversy.

The Academy Award winner recently sat down for a frank discussion about public shaming and its lasting consequences. During his appearance on a popular podcast, the Boston native didn't mince words about what happens to those caught in the crosshairs of public outrage.

"I bet some of those people would have preferred to go to jail for 18 months or whatever, and then come out and say, 'I paid my debt. Like, we're done. Like, can we be done?' The thing about getting kind of excoriated, publicly like that, it just never ends. And it's the first thing that… you know, it just will follow you to the grave," the actor explained.

A Personal Brush With Controversy

The star's comments carry weight from personal experience. Back in 2021, he found himself navigating treacherous waters after discussing a conversation with his daughter about offensive language. The incident nearly derailed his reputation.

During that controversial interview, he mentioned "retiring" a slur from his vocabulary after his daughter called him out. The backlash was swift and severe. Public criticism mounted quickly.

Damage Control and Apologies

The fallout forced him to issue a public statement. "During a recent interview, I recalled a discussion I had with my daughter where I attempted to contextualize for her the progress that has been made – though by no means completed – since I was," he began in his apology, though the statement appeared incomplete in reports.

The podcast conversation revealed his perspective on how public shaming differs from traditional justice systems. Unlike serving time and moving forward, digital-age controversies create permanent records that resurface indefinitely.

His collaboration with longtime friend Ben Affleck continues despite past controversies. Their latest Netflix project demonstrates that some careers can weather public storms, though the scars remain visible.
