DC Director Drops Full Superman Script Online With Cut Scenes
The filmmaker behind DC's latest Superman reboot has made his complete screenplay available to fans, revealing deleted sequences and providing unprecedented insight into his creative process.
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn surprised fans by posting his complete Superman screenplay online, seven months after the film hit theaters. The move gives audiences an unprecedented look at the foundation of DC's new Gods and Monsters saga, which Gunn and partner Peter Safran plan to expand across multiple films and TV shows.
This isn't Gunn's first time sharing scripts with fans. He previously released screenplays for his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, demonstrating his belief that story comes first in filmmaking. The director insists on completing scripts before moving into pre-production, a philosophy clearly reflected in his approach to launching the new DC universe.
Deleted Scenes Reveal Expanded World
The published script contains several scenes that didn't make the final cut, including a memorable sequence featuring Superman's dog Krypto. In the deleted scene, Superman scolds Krypto for attacking "gigantic white kaijus covered in fur" - Abominable Snowmen living near the Fortress of Solitude. This fantastical element showcases how Gunn's DC universe differs from previous superhero film launches.
Unlike the MCU or original DCEU, which introduced heroes gradually in grounded settings, Gunn's approach throws multiple heroes into the mix without extensive exposition. The script trusts audiences to become immersed in this world where metahumans have existed for years.
Character Development Takes Center Stage
Reading through the screenplay reveals Gunn's priority on character relationships over world-building spectacle. The script dedicates substantial pages to Lois Lane's interview with Superman, emphasizing Clark Kent's moral foundation and his connection with Lois. This focus on emotional depth mixed with humor has become a Gunn trademark.
An earlier draft posted on the WB Awards site shows different pacing choices, particularly in third-act battles between Superman and Ultraman. The alternate version creates more tension during Jarhanpur sequences and features Anthony Carrigan's Metamorpho appearing solo rather than with other heroes.
Behind-the-Scenes Creative Process
Having access to both the final script and earlier drafts provides rare insight into how screenplays evolve during production. The differences between versions show how directors adjust pacing, character moments, and action sequences based on practical filmmaking needs.
Gunn's willingness to share his creative process helps fans understand the complex journey from written page to finished film. With Superman serving as the cornerstone for future DC projects, including the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, this transparency builds anticipation for what's coming next in the expanded universe.
