The horror prequel series focusing on Pennywise's origins is quietly moving into its second chapter, even as HBO keeps renewal plans under wraps. Director Andy Muschietti has begun work on the follow-up season, according to industry sources.
The news surfaced alongside reports about Christina Hodson joining the DCU's Batman project. Muschietti's involvement in developing new episodes comes as no surprise given his previous statements about the show's future direction.
Depression-Era Derry Takes Center Stage
The upcoming season will jump back to 1935, placing it 27 years before the first season's events. Muschietti revealed specific plot details in a December interview with Variety, explaining the timeframe choice.
"We can only say the stuff that's already known, like it's in 1935, 27 years before season 1 and it involves the massacre of the Bradley Gang from the books," Muschietti stated. "It takes place during the Depression in Derry, and there are some new characters and some characters from this season as well, but younger versions of them."
Familiar Faces Return with New Actors
Long-time Derry residents will appear again, though different performers will likely portray them. Kimberley Guerrero's Rose, James Remar's Shaw, and Madeleine Stowe's Ingrid are expected to return as younger versions of themselves.
The three-decade time jump means recasting these roles becomes necessary. Bill Skarsgård will definitely return as the terrifying clown entity, continuing his reign of terror in the cursed Maine town.
First Season Sets Foundation
The initial season, branded as "Chapter One" in its end credits, established the groundwork for this expanded timeline. The show streams on HBO Max, building anticipation for what comes next in the Stephen King universe.
