Levy Confirms Father-Son Theme for Star Wars: Starfighter
The director opens up about bringing back classic franchise elements while feeling the weight of fan expectations for the 2027 release.
The director behind Star Wars: Starfighter just dropped hints about what fans can expect from the next chapter in the galaxy far, far away. Shawn Levy confirmed his upcoming film will center on a father-son relationship that echoes the Luke-Anakin connection from earlier movies.
Speaking with The New York Times, Levy opened up about the enormous pressure of helming a Star Wars project. "My 10-year-old self is on set with me every day. That's how I make movies," he explained. The filmmaker called the experience "more stressful and challenging than anything I've ever done."
Casting Speculation and Plot Details
Levy stayed tight-lipped about specific story elements. Fans wonder if Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray will play the father-son duo, but the director wouldn't confirm casting details. What he did reveal was his intention to bring back themes that made the original trilogy so compelling.
Disney and Lucasfilm picked Levy from dozens of potential directors. His selection sparked mixed reactions among the fanbase, though his track record with major productions like Stranger Things helped ease some concerns.
From Comedy to Space Opera
The filmmaker has expanded beyond family comedies in recent years. He's produced diverse projects including Arrival, The Boogeyman, and Never Let Go. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy defended the choice, arguing that family comedies require significant skill to execute properly.
"Family comedies are difficult to make and Levy's experience made him the right choice to elevate Star Wars," Kennedy stated.
Anniversary Release Plans
Star Wars: Starfighter hits theaters May 28, 2027. The timing coincides with the 50th anniversary of George Lucas's space opera franchise. The cast includes Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams, with Levy serving as both director and producer alongside Kennedy.
