The live-action adaptation that first premiered on Peacock will make its Netflix debut on February 10, 2026, bringing Dean DeBlois's reimagined dragon saga to a wider streaming audience.

Netflix subscribers will get their chance to experience the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon starting February 10, 2026. The film, which originally launched on Peacock last October, represents a major streaming acquisition for the platform.

Dean DeBlois, the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker behind the original animated trilogy, wrote and directed this live-action adaptation. The project transforms the beloved animated world into a practical effects spectacle that premiered in theaters back in June 2025.

Star-Studded Cast Brings Berk to Life

Gerard Butler returns to the franchise, reprising his voice role from the animated films. The cast features several newcomers including Mason Thames from The Black Phone, who takes on the lead role of Hiccup. Nico Parker, known for her work in The Last of Us, plays the fierce Astrid.

Nick Frost joins as Gobber the blacksmith, while the ensemble includes Gabriel Howell, Julian Dennison, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, and Peter Serafinowicz. Each brings their own interpretation to characters fans have loved for over a decade.

Plot Stays True to Original Vision

The story unfolds on the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have maintained their ancient rivalry for generations. Hiccup, the inventive son of Chief Stoick the Vast, breaks centuries of tradition by befriending Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon.

Their unlikely partnership reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging everything Viking society believes. With Astrid and Gobber supporting him, Hiccup faces a world divided by fear and misunderstanding. An ancient threat emerges that endangers both species, making Hiccup's friendship with Toothless the key to survival.

Mixed Critical Reception, Strong Audience Appeal

Critics gave the remake a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, falling short of the original animated film's perfect 99% score. Audiences responded much more positively, awarding it a 97% "Verified Hot" rating on the Popcornmeter.

The strong audience response has already prompted development of a sequel. The film's success on Peacock demonstrated significant viewer interest in seeing the animated world brought to life through practical effects and live-action performances.

US Netflix subscribers can mark their calendars for February 10th, though international availability remains unclear. Other regions will need to wait for announcements about local streaming platforms and release dates.
