Pratt's AI Thriller Bombs With Worst Reviews in Decade
The Marvel star's latest film about a detective facing an AI judge has critics delivering harsh verdicts. Physical restraints on set added unexpected challenges to an already demanding performance.
Chris Pratt's latest venture into science fiction territory isn't winning over critics. His new thriller about artificial intelligence and justice has earned some of the actor's harshest reviews in more than ten years.
The film casts Pratt as Chris Raven, a detective facing murder charges for allegedly killing his spouse. Raven gets just 90 minutes to convince an artificial intelligence judge of his innocence before receiving a death sentence.
Technology Takes Center Stage
Director Timur Bekmambetov, known for his screenlife filmmaking approach, built the movie around LA's fictional "municipal cloud" system. Every resident must upload their device data to this network, and all trial evidence appears on screens during the proceedings.
"It was definitely a challenge, and something I hadn't done before," Pratt explained about working with the tech-heavy concept. The actor found himself grappling with the futuristic legal system both on and off camera.
Physical Constraints Add Difficulty
Throughout his character's trial, Pratt remained locked in a chair with restraints around his wrists and ankles. Rebecca Ferguson plays Judge Maddox, the AI overseeing Raven's fate.
"It was a big challenge. But then restricting yourself by having your hands and feet locked and being stuck in a chair all day, it was a challenge," Pratt said. He requested real restraints to make his performance more authentic.
The actor couldn't scratch an itch or move freely during filming. "I asked them to actually lock it so I could wrestle against it. And also, you know, if I was sweating and it was itching my face, I couldn't scratch it. I thought those restrictions might lend themselves to a better performance."
The movie hits theaters January 23, despite the critical reception that marks a low point in Pratt's recent career.
