Viggo Mortensen's Surprising Favorite LOTR Scene Choice
The Aragorn star picks an unexpected moment from the trilogy as his top scene, praising its emotional authenticity and absence of digital effects in a recent anniversary interview.
Viggo Mortensen just dropped a bombshell about his favorite Lord of the Rings scene. The actor who brought Aragorn to life didn't pick the obvious moments fans might expect.
No dramatic door-opening at Helm's Deep. No coronation ceremony. Instead, Mortensen chose Boromir's death scene as his top pick from the entire trilogy.
Why This Scene Stands Above the Rest
Speaking during The Fellowship of the Ring's 25th anniversary celebration, Mortensen explained his choice with surprising candor. "That scene, I have to say, no offence to anybody else or any other part of the trilogy, but that's maybe my favorite scene. It's such a beautiful scene," he told Empire magazine.
What makes this moment special? According to Mortensen, it's the raw human emotion. "And there are no effects, there are no imaginary monsters. It's just two people who have a connection in terms of their ethnicity -- you know, Gondor and all that -- but they've been at odds. They've been kinda butting heads until then. And then there's just such a strong connection."
The Power of Sean Bean's Final Moments
The scene Mortensen references shows Boromir's final moments after taking multiple arrows while defending Merry and Pippin. Sean Bean's character, despite previous conflicts with Aragorn, swears loyalty to his "king" as he dies.
This moment represents one of the trilogy's most emotionally charged sequences. The Extended Edition version particularly showcases the transformation of their relationship from tension to mutual respect.
Future Middle-earth Adventures
Fans wondering about Mortensen's return have reason for hope. The Hunt for Gollum arrives in theaters December 17, 2027, focusing on Aragorn's pursuit of the creature.
Mortensen previously expressed openness to reprising his role, with one condition. "I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise," he said in 2024.
