The legendary filmmaker's latest Avatar installment is tracking toward a historic milestone that would cement his unprecedented dominance at the global box office, surpassing achievements of cinema's greatest directors.

The director behind some of cinema's biggest blockbusters stands on the brink of achieving something no filmmaker has ever accomplished. With Avatar: Fire and Ash rapidly approaching the billion-dollar threshold, Cameron is positioned to become the first director in Hollywood history to deliver four consecutive movies that cross this coveted milestone.

This remarkable streak would surpass the achievements of legendary filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, who has only one entry in the billion-dollar club with Jurassic Park, and Martin Scorsese, who has never reached this financial peak. Cameron's current run of massive hits includes Titanic (1997) at $2.257 billion, Avatar (2009) with $2.9 billion, and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) earning $2.343 billion.

Breaking New Ground in Cinema History

Currently, Cameron shares the three-consecutive-billion-dollar achievement with the Russo brothers, whose Marvel trilogy of Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame all surpassed the billion mark. However, Fire and Ash's success would establish Cameron as the sole holder of this unprecedented record.

Recent box office tracking shows the movie generated nearly $70 million globally on Friday alone. Industry analysts project the film will reach between $750 million and $800 million worldwide by Sunday, with the billion-dollar mark expected by next Friday. The movie's domestic four-day collection currently stands at $84 million, leading the final box office weekend of the year.

The Challenge of Reaching Two Billion

While the billion-dollar milestone appears within reach, the $2 billion target presents greater challenges. Fire and Ash experienced only a 33% drop between its first and second weekends, significantly better than The Way of Water's 52% decline, though far from the original Avatar's remarkable 1.8% drop in 2009.

The latest installment has collected $153.7 million domestically and $390.6 million internationally, totaling $544.3 million worldwide. Despite its domestic opening of $89.1 million falling short of The Way of Water's $134.1 million debut, it exceeded the original Avatar's $77 million opening weekend.

Critical Reception and Future Prospects

Fire and Ash carries the distinction of being Cameron's lowest-rated theatrical release, earning a 66% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes from over 312 reviews. However, audiences have responded more favorably, giving it a 90% rating. The film received praise for its visual effects, character development, and action sequences, though critics noted the plot's simplicity.

Produced on a budget exceeding $400 million, making it among the most expensive films ever made, Fire and Ash features returning stars Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington as Neytiri and Jake Sully, with Oona Chaplin joining as Varang, leader of the Ash People. Despite mixed critical reception, the movie's strong audience appeal and international box office performance suggest Cameron's latest venture will secure his place in cinema history.
