The filmmaker reveals how his late co-star's behind-the-scenes intervention during their Marvel collaboration transformed his approach to handling pressure and self-doubt in Hollywood.

The entertainment world lost one of its brightest stars when Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020. His performances across various genres, from massive superhero films to intimate indie projects, established him as a generational talent. His portrayal of T'Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe became his most recognized role, debuting in Captain America: Civil War before headlining his own 2018 feature.

Director Ryan Coogler helmed that solo venture, marking his largest production at the time. The scale brought immense pressure. During a recent conversation on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, Coogler shared how his leading man helped him navigate those overwhelming moments.

Words That Changed Everything

"When I look back at my relationship with him, it taught me so much. But the biggest thing is to not take things for granted. Even all of this, the success of Coogler's new film, Sinners... doing awards press with my cast. Before losing him, I would not be present in those moments. I would be overwhelmed or considering it to be work, or dealing with impostor syndrome. When I would be stressed on Panther, I would say, 'Man, I have to hurry up and do this, or I'm going to get fired.' [Boseman] would say, 'Hey, man, stop saying that,'" Coogler explained.

The actor's calming influence proved essential to completing the project. Boseman didn't just offer casual reassurance. He took direct action.

A Protective Presence

"[Boseman] actually pulled me to the side and was like, 'Yo, stop saying that, man,'" Coogler recalled. The director's constant fear of losing his position due to perceived inadequacy was met with firm support from his star. "Yo, I'm not going to let anything happen to you... I'm not letting nobody fire you, bro, [so] please stop saying that. Relax, man. Do your work, enjoy it," Boseman told him.

That guidance proved prophetic. The film became a cultural phenomenon, earning nearly $1.35 billion worldwide. It finished as 2018's second-highest earner, trailing only Avengers: Infinity War. Critics embraced it too, giving it a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Eight years later, it remains among Marvel Studios' most celebrated releases.

Lasting Impact

The movie's awards recognition cemented its status beyond typical superhero fare. Multiple nominations validated it as serious cinema, not just successful entertainment.

Coogler has carried those lessons forward. Despite the emotional challenges of creating Black Panther: Wakanda Forever after Boseman's death, he completed the sequel as a tribute. His current project, Sinners, represents one of 2025's most anticipated releases. He's already confirmed work on a third Black Panther installment, with potential production dates being discussed.

The director credits his late collaborator's wisdom for helping him stay grounded during high-pressure situations. Those conversations on set continue shaping how he approaches major productions today.
