After its original production company shuttered, the Final Fantasy 9 animated series has found new life with a different studio, promising 13 episodes of 2D animation featuring Vivi's Black Mage children.

What seemed like another casualty in the entertainment industry has gotten an unexpected second chance. The Final Fantasy 9 animated series, which appeared doomed after its production company closed down, has been picked up by a new studio and is now eyeing a 2028 debut.

From Cancellation to Revival

The project originally launched in 2021 under Cyber Group Studios, a French animation house known for their work on the Mini Ninjas series based on IO Interactive's game. However, when Cyber Group Studios shut its doors earlier this year, fans assumed the beloved RPG adaptation would disappear along with it.

French publication Écran Total recently revealed that Euro Visual has stepped in to rescue the production. The new arrangement calls for a 2D animated series spanning 13 episodes, each running 22 minutes in length.

Black Mages Take Center Stage

The storyline will center around six young Black Mages who are descendants of Vivi, one of Final Fantasy 9's most cherished characters. This plot direction aligns with previously leaked information that surfaced earlier this year, including concept art for "Final Fantasy 9: The Black Mages' Legacy."

The leaked materials showed six Black Mage characters, including one in a frozen state, which matches both the earlier rumors and the newly confirmed storyline. This consistency suggests the project has maintained its creative vision despite changing hands between studios.

While this development won't satisfy fans hoping for a full game remake, it demonstrates that Square Enix remains committed to expanding the Final Fantasy 9 universe through different media formats.
